12/5/2023 0 Comments Remove mackeeper completelyThe truth is that some of our former partners used to trick people into installing the software. You're right, it's history but this is in the past. If not a virus, a major scam with a history of making false advertising claims and paying for phoney revies. My next step is to take it to the Apple Store on Tuesday, but I would really appreciate additional advice. There is no way to get it to do anything. I used Safe Mode to get into my MacBook Air. UPDATE: I have taken my computer back home, and my dad checked it out. Thank you all for reading this, as I’m really scared and need the help/advice. My question is- how likely is it that I was hacked by MacKeeper or Derek? Why else has my computer randomly shut down and been unable to turn back on? Is it worth trying to change all of my passwords, or would the hacker have gotten everything by now? My parents also told me that I have to change all of my passwords to everything, like Amazon (which my bank account is connected to) and Google (which has several years of e-mails and very personal photos that I obviously don’t want anyone accessing). My dad told me that it had probably been hacked, and that I should leave it completely shut off until he can look at it. I tried logging into it when it restarted, but every time, my laptop would shut down before it could finish logging in. As I was manually deleting files that I no longer need for storage space, however, my laptop abruptly froze and then completely shut down. My mom and dad feared that because I had given Derek access to my controls, he could still hack my laptop. I went through instructions on how to completely delete MacKeeper from my MacBook online, and my dad said that he would check my laptop tomorrow to make sure that there were no more traces of MacKeeper on my laptop. He abruptly left and ended his control over my laptop.Ī conversation about MacKeeper with my parents left me extremely paranoid. He went to proceed to help me finish setting up MacKeeper, but I told him that my family and I decided that getting this service was a bad idea, but thanked him for his time again. I thanked him for his generosity and patience. I then firmly told him that I wasn’t going to be buying this because my parents had vetoed it, and we aren’t fans of subscription services. I tried several times to politely tell him that I wasn’t interested, but he kept pushing. He told me that I needed to save money, and that getting a discounted one-year plan for $5 a month was what I absolutely needed to do, and I needed to do it now, or else the discount wouldn’t work since I just made my account. Derek was polite and instructed me on how to use the software, telling me of all of the advantages of using MacKeeper and how I should probably run weekly checks to make sure that I don’t have any new viruses (I’ve had this laptop for 2 years and have never had a virus, and have never been concerned about getting one). I felt like this was weird and it made me uncomfortable, but I did it anyway, because there was an option for me to end Derek’s access by pushing a button at any time. A virtual assistant told me that in order to activate the MacKeeper software, I had to remotely hand over the controls of my MacBook to an employee named Derek. I decided to purchase the $10 one-month subscription option, thinking that I could just use this thing once, free up the extra storage on my computer, and then delete it. The main goal in doing so would be to free up some extra storage on my Mac, since I am a college student and I recently returned to campus for the fall semester. This evening, I (20F) read a couple of good reviews about MacKeeper and thought that I had researched it properly enough to decide that I was going to download it.
